5 Stouts You Have to Try for Stout Season

Updated: Jan 23, 2021

As the new year rolls in and resolutions are formed we are right in the middle of stout season. We'll cover five stouts the Bayou Barley team feel are must tries for the season.

A barrel aged version of founders popular breakfast stout. This beer is extremely smooth for a double digit ABV. And has a very sweet taste from the maple. Honestly just an extremely delicious beer. CBS pours out the bottle thick, but creates a perfect head.

Unfortunately 2019 was the last year founders currently planned to brew this beer. So if you see it grab it!

This beer currently has a Beer Advocate score of 100. A testament to how delicious this beer is.

The joy of a fresh poured Dragon's Milk comes from bourbon oak barrels the stout is aged in. This was one of the first barrel aged beers the Bayou Barley team tried and has remained one of our go to favorites. There is a strong vanilla/ caramel taste to the beer, but the booziness of the oak barrels are still on full display. This is a hallmark trait of barrel aged stouts that should never be overshadowed by the sweet notes in my opinion.

This was a tier 1 pastry stout. I'm slightly biased, pastry stouts are my second favorite style. But this was one of the best I have had.

You immediately taste the cinnamon and maple notes. This brew is essentially breakfast at night.

Currently Loaded French Toast has a Beer Advocate score of 93.

This espresso stout has big bold flavor. The espresso coffee flavor is immediately noticeable. As pouring the beer the sweet aroma of vanilla and toffee balance with the scent of espresso, think of a fresh latte from your favorite coffee shop.

Hop & Sting brewery is located in Texas in the DFW suburb of Grapevine. We highly recommend swinging by this establishment if you are ever going through the area.

As soon as you open this one you get smacked right in the face with the aroma of alcohol with hints of coffee. It pours almost black with a very dense medium-khaki head that retains well. The taste is much more balanced than the smell. Upon tasting you get notes of coffee with a smoky rye flavor following. It finishes smooth with notes of dark chocolate and oak. It feels nice and rich on the tongue. This is a solid stout that's worth a try especially at its price tag. For a 13% beer this one is fairly cheap!
